GENERAL PRODUCT INFORMATION

Potassium carbonate (K2CO3) is a translucent and odourless inorganic alkaline solution or a white and odourless solid chemical compound that is available in crystalline granulated, powder and hydrated form.

K2CO3 is also known as potash carbonate and is used in fertilisers, agrochemicals, heat-resistant glass, soaps, and in the manufacturing of other chemical compounds. Vynova supplies several grades of potassium carbonate to customers worldwide.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

Potassium carbonate has historically been used for glass and soap production. Contemporary applications rely on the compound’s key properties, such as its ability to release heat (exothermic), which makes it useful as a deicer. Its water-absorbing properties find applications in the agrochemical industry and in health and beauty products.

Potassium carbonate is used in several food applications. In the production of chocolate and cocoa powder for confectionary items such as biscuits, potassium carbonate is used as an alkalising agent. The purpose of the alkalisation step (’Dutching’) is the acidity regulation of the cocoa beans for aroma enhancement and the production of differently coloured cocoa powders by reducing flavanols (natural plant dye of cacao).

Additionally, K2CO3 is used to lower the acidity of wine and serves as a drying agent for fruit processing, as well as in formulations for inks and toners, disinfectants and cleaning products.

Potassium carbonate hydrate used in animal feed helps heat-stressed animals to regulate their potassium balance.
